12th Century
Great Helm and Chainmail. The Great Helm was great head armour at this time although it looked a bit like a bucket on your head but it gave you good protection because it was hard to penetrate and it was hard to stab people through the helmet. Chainmail are connected rings that make a mesh. It is hard to penetrate because of the many rings that are there. It can only be penetrated with piercing weapons that are smaller like a rapier.
13th Century
Cerveilerre and Hauberk. The Cervelierre didn't provide much protection as it only protected the top of your head and not your face, it sat on your head like a bowl. The Hauberk is like chainmail but it goes down to your thighs and up on top of your head where the Cervelierre sits.
14th Century
Bassinet and the Brigandine. The Bassinet is also like the Great Helm in which it is all closed, but unlike the Great Helm, the Bassinet has space for your nose but the Great Helm goes down straight. The Brigandine is a type of armour that you have to open up to go in to. It is made of leather on the outside and has steel rivets inside. Iit was a short, flexible coat and it worked like a flak jacket.
15th Century
Armet and Cuirass. The Armet is a head piece that is like the Bassinet but instead of the nose piece staying with the whole head armour; it can be lifted up or removed. The Cuirass is a type of body armour that is all steel all around the torso.
16th Century - From the 16th Century on, the Cuirass was the armour used.
Burgonet. The Burgonet is sort of like the Cervelierre as it sits on your head. But the Burgonet also covers the back of your neck.
17th Century
Close Helm. This head piece is very similar to the Armet. The only difference it has is that instead of two pivots on the cheek for the bevor and visor, the Close Helm just has one.
